An inside look at the hacking & troublemaking of FAT Lab. Video by PBS Off Book.
As we become more and more engaged with the internet in every aspect of our lives, powerful questions have arisen regarding the ownership of digital media and information, the relationship between corporations, governments, and individuals online, the power of pop culture influence, and the dissolving border between the digital and physical worlds. Taking these issues head-on is The Free Art & Technology (F.A.T.) Lab. An international group of 21 artists, hackers, thinkers, designers, developers, and entrepreneurs, F.A.T. Lab employs art, activism, pop culture, and a wealth of knowledge about how the internet works to create projects that challenge people and institutions to think a little deeper about this new world we all live in.
As net art is entering into widespread recognition, a trend of purchasing is occurring by interested collectors. Instead of the takedowns typically seen from Homeland Security / FBI domain seizures, collectors are issuing their own takedown notices as digital web pages are being entered into private galleries & museums, removing these pieces from the public visibility that gave these artists and their digital works their viewing audience.

The notorious artist Ai Weiwei has been detained by Chinese authorities with very little known information about his status and wellbeing. He has been detained for over 59 days, upsetting many in the art world for the treatment of an expressive artist in a country where outspoken expression is largely oppressed.
We, as artists and art viewers, should not let this happen. Protest the Chinese detention of Ai Weiwei. Boycott! Protest! Block Chinese sites until Ai Weiwei is released by preventing yourself from surfing into Chinese web territories.
